On Wednesday, January 16, Hiawatha Academies’ board of director’s, made a motion to officially recognize the Association of Parents and Guardians. The Association was founded in May of 2018 with the purpose of becoming a welcoming and inclusive space where parents navigating issues impacting their scholars can benefit from the collective support of other families to work with the schools. “We are pleased to have the support of the board of directors,” said Jose Gomez, parent at HLA-Northrop. “We’ll continue to support other families at Hiawatha because we all want a better education for our children.”

A motion to pass the resolution was moved by Jerry Alcazar, and passed unanimously. “The Board is excited to continue our work with the Association of Parents and Guardians. We appreciate their hard work and stand ready to provide whatever the group needs to ensure the success of our wonderful scholars.”  The Association of Parents and Guardians has been meeting every month to plan with leaders of each school.

Thus far, they’ve the opportunity to interview executive director, Colette Owens, and school principals, Sherene Judeh, Matt Toppin and Daniela Vasan, at their respective schools. “Once we interview all of the school leaders, we will meet parents in the Association to share our recommendations with the board,” stated Jonathan Alvarez, parent leader and board director. “We look forward to what we can accomplish together.”
