Family Academy graduation

Hiawatha Academies’ Family Academy programs provide the parents and adult caregivers of our scholars with the opportunity to deepen their understanding of how to support their children’s academic, social and emotional development while also developing deeper connections with other Hiawatha Academies’ families and staff and strengthening our community.

Starting in the 2018-19 academic year, Hiawatha Academies is offering three thematically based sessions of Family Academy, each of which will be offered twice per school year.

1.
Family Academy on Leadership and Advocacy
Families will …

  • Learn about disparities in educational outcomes for students in Minneapolis and historical context for the opportunity gap
  • Deepen understanding of the U.S. school system and structure of Hiawatha Academies
  • Gain tools to advocate for their children and community from school-level issues to city and state policies that impact education

2.
Family Academy on Mental Health
In partnership with Hiawatha’s school psychologist and social workers
Families will …

  • Learn about the impact of parents’ childhood experiences on their own parenting practices and how to heal from childhood trauma as adults
  • Learn about the impact of stress on children’s brains and their ability to learn
  • Gain tools for helping themselves and their children reduce and relieve stress and practice self-care

Family Academy on Raising Sexually Healthy Children
In partnership with CLUES* Sexual Health Team (*Comunidades Latinas Unidas En Servicio)
Families will …

  • Learn about sexuality – including anatomy, gender, and healthy relationships – and how it relates to child development
  • Strengthen communication skills and confidence, when it comes to talking to their children about taboo topics like sex
  • Gain tools for answering their child’s questions and using “teachable moments” in daily life to share information and discuss values
