Navigating the education system so that you can be the best advocate possible for your child is challenging. That’s why the next round of Family Academy sessions will aim to give you the leadership tools you need.

Focusing on “Leadership & Advocacy,” the Family Academy program will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays, Sept. 15, Sept. 22 and Sept. 29 at Hiawatha College Prep-Kingfield, 3800 Pleasant Ave., Minneapolis.

These sessions are for at families of children who attend Hiawatha Leadership Academy-Morris Park, Hiawatha College Prep-Kingfield, and Hiawatha Collegiate High School.

Families will have the opportunity to:

  • Learn about the state of education in Minneapolis, about Hiawatha’s mission, and how you can get involved to improve our schools.
  • Strengthen the relationships between you, your children, and your children’s school.
  • Gain tools to better support your children in school, helping them graduate from high school and be ready for higher education.
  • Meet other Hiawatha parents, form network support, and build community with other families.

Free lunch, childcare and language interpretation will be provided.

To register, call Shannon Gavin, Family Engagement Manager, at 651-497-5471 or email

Family Academy sessions are themed each month and held at differing Hiawatha Academy campuses. “Mental Health” will be October’s theme, with sessions being held Oct. 2, Oct. 9 and Oct. 16 at Hiawatha Leadership Academy-Northrop.
