Minnesota Science Educator Honored with Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching
MINNEAPOLIS, MN — January 24, 2025 — Hiawatha Collegiate High School is proud to announce that Lainey Bristow, Department Chair of Science and AP Biology teacher, has been awarded the prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) for High School Science. This recognition highlights her outstanding contributions to science education and her dedication to fostering curiosity, innovation, and equity in the classroom.
Lainey’s journey to becoming an award-winning educator is one of passion and perseverance. Inspired by early experiences exploring the outdoors, volunteering at nature centers, and engaging in scientific research, she developed a lifelong commitment to understanding and teaching the natural world. Her path took her from studying endangered butterflies at the University of Notre Dame to co-authoring scientific publications, and ultimately to the classroom, where her work has transformed how students learn and engage with science.
“Science was always my favorite subject because it merged creativity and wonder,” Lainey shared. “My experiences hiking, camping, and exploring as a child, combined with incredible mentors and hands-on research opportunities, shaped my belief that science is about discovery and connection. I wanted to bring that sense of wonder to my students.”
Since joining Hiawatha Academies in 2021, Lainey has become a driving force in science education, especially for multilingual learners. By incorporating inquiry-based methods, culturally responsive teaching, and hands-on learning, she creates a classroom environment where students of all backgrounds can see themselves as scientists. Her students don’t just learn about biology—they explore real-world applications, from analyzing food labels to studying cancer biology, all while building critical thinking skills.
As Department Chair, Lainey has spearheaded initiatives to enhance teaching practices across the school, mentoring new educators and leading professional development sessions. Her leadership extends beyond the classroom, with involvement in national fellowships like Stanford University’s Hollyhock Program and contributions to the Minnesota Department of Education as a science assessment item writer and review panelist.
The Presidential Award is a testament to Lainey’s unwavering commitment to her students’ success. “Receiving this award is an incredible honor and an opportunity to reflect on my journey as an educator,” she said. “What truly sets my teaching apart is how much my students inspire me every day. Their courage, curiosity, and drive to succeed push me to be a better teacher.”
In addition to this national recognition, Lainey’s innovative projects—like the Senior Showcase in Advanced Science Research—have empowered students to lead data-driven initiatives aimed at improving school culture and teaching practices. These projects exemplify her belief in the power of student voice and leadership to create meaningful change.
Looking ahead, Lainey plans to use this recognition to advocate for equitable and inclusive science education statewide and nationally. Her goals include shaping curriculum and assessments to better serve multilingual learners, expanding inquiry-based learning opportunities, and mentoring other educators striving for excellence.
“Science education has the power to transform how students see the world and themselves,” she emphasized. “My hope is that every student—no matter their background—can feel confident and excited to engage in science and see themselves as the innovators and problem-solvers of the future.”
Hiawatha Academies congratulates Lainey on this well-deserved honor and celebrates her contributions to empowering the next generation of scientists and critical thinkers.
